13th International Congress for Eighteenth Century Studies
Graz, 25 – 29 July 2011
The board of International Society for Eighteenth Century Studies, based in London, accepted the application of the Karl-Franzens-University for organising the next world congress in Graz in 2011. Thanks to the effort of ao. Univ.-Prof. DDr. h.c. Harald Heppner from the Department of History at the University of Graz the Styrian capital will be the next host of the scientific mega event. About 1,000 scholars from all round the world, representing various scientific fields such as History, Literature, Philosophy, History of Art, Ethnology etc. will participate.
The Eighteenth Century represents the period when most of the preconditions and processes of modern life have been developed or started, such as the enlightenment, secularisation, popular education, encyclopedias, introduction of standards, human rights, democracy, steam power, acceleration of the rhythm of life. Only the 18th century serves as the central subject of a worldwide network of humanities researchers.
