The Francis-Stephen-Prize & Francis-Stephen-Promotion-Prize

An Initiative of
the Austrian Society for Eighteenth Century Studies


In memoriam to the Emperor Francis Stephen of Lorraine’s special role as patron to science and art in and for „Austria“, the ÖGE 18, supported by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science and Research, bestows two prizes every second year. Aim is to advance excellent scholars of arts and humanities.

The FRANCIS-STEPHEN-PRIZE of the History and Culture of the Habsburg monarchy in the Eighteenth Century is awared to Dissertations (post graduated theses) or Habilitations (post doctoral theses) or papers of equivalent importance about the Habsburg Monarchy of the Eighteenth Century. Language can be German, French or English as well as any language spoken in the former Habsburg Monarchy.

The FRANCIS-STEPHEN-PROMOTION-PRIZE goes to excellent theses on the level of Master-Degrees. The call for applications goes out to graduates in humanities. However the focus of the work must lie on the 18th century and the work must have been approbated at an Austrian university.

With the prize the society aims to promote a lasting interest in Eighteenth Century Studies.
